Hate the Player: The Ben Johnson Story
A satirical sports mockumentary following the global sprinting icon’s definitely-not-biased account of one the most infamous scandals in sports history.
In order to reclaim his legacy and set the record straight, Johnson self-funds a documentary to finally tell his side of the story surrounding the 1988 Summer Games, after going from world record holder to global headline in 9.79 seconds, in what is now known as “The Dirtiest Race in History”.
So yeah, Ben took steroids. But so did everybody else.
Ben recounts his version of events, looking back at key relationships that made him the highly controversial man he is today – from his mom who adored him (some would say too much), to his coach who moulded him, his doctor who “motivated” him through performance-enhancing drugs (a lot of them), and a world of fans that idolized him, only to turn their backs on him.
There is so much more to Ben’s story that he never got to tell. Is it wildly divorced from reality or not? You be the judge.
